Water Wars to Water Vision -
"Our best chance at a workable solution to a 20-year-old water dispute" - Dan Tonsmeire, Apalachicola Riverkeeper

"The ACFS, due to its organization and make-up, brings together the most knowledgeable, diverse group representing all water interests in the ACF watershed..."

The Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers flow through Georgia and Alabama before joining to form the Apalachicola River as it heads southward through Florida to the Gulf of Mexico.

The 19,600 square-mile Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin is home to one of our country's fastest growing populations centers, as well as some of America's most biodiverse habitats.  And it is also at the center of our region's water sharing debate.

Dozens of different groups - from residents to corporate interests to environmental advocates -  have long held divergent views on how water should be allocated and managed in the three states.  While the debate grows louder in times of drought, solutions are necessary regardless of rainfall, due to the ever-increasing number of water usage needs in our region.

A new non-profit organization, ACF Stakeholders, Inc. is now undertaking an ambitious initiative to develop solutions for the ACF River Basin. Acting as a ACF clearinghouse, ACFS is collecting data in a consistent & equitable manner from stakeholders and sources throughout the region, in some cases for the first time.  Involving a wide-ranging group, ACF can provide an opportunity to build mutual confidence and trust among stakeholders from all three states and all four sub-basins of the watershed.  Working together for the first time, participating stakeholders are working together to create a water vision for what has been a contentious allocation of resources in the past.

Apalachicola Riverkeeper Dan Tonsmeire is executive director of ACF Stakeholders, Inc.
