Acorn Lake Debris

By Georgia Ackerman

April 11, 2019.  Today we motored over from Pine Log, also called Abercrombie Landing, across the river to Acorn Lake. This is a terrific area to visit via kayak or canoe. In fact, it is part of FWC’s paddling trail system. We spotted several swallow-tail kites high above the trees. Joe Crozier and Josh Adams of the Apalachee Regional Planning Council joined volunteer boat captain, Roy Ogles and me for the short trip. We received reports of excessive debris in the lake, likely resulting from Hurricane Michael.

Marshes and wetlands act as natural filters of pollutants. Hurricane debris frequently ends up here, too. On Thursday’s visual survey of Acorn Lake, we filled the bow of our boat with debris pulled from the water, including a partial boat mast. A larger coordinated clean-up effort is needed here. Interested in helping with this clean-up day via small boat, SUP or kayak? Please sign up for our e-news (on our website) as we seek partners to coordinate with. You can also send us a note expressing interest at [email protected]
