On November 20, 2008, at 10 a.m. EST, the Northwest Florida Transportation Corridor Authority will hold its monthly meeting at the Apalachicola courthouse annex.
Earlier this year the NFTCA approved three alternatives for the potential relocation and improvement of US Highway 98 in Franklin County. The alternatives include: 1) No Action; 2) Improve Existing; or 3) New Corridor. As a direct result of badgering by the Apalachicola Riverkeeper, Rep. Will Kendrick, and Commissioners Cheryl Sanders and Russell Crofton, and folks like you during the previous 18 months, HDR and the NFTCA scuttled plans to put a new corridor through Tate’s Hell State Forest and bypass downtown Carrabelle and Eastpoint. In addition, they finally expanded the study area to include State Road 65 and County Road 67. Procedurally, HDR and the NFTCA have now embarked on a 3-5 years environmental assessment and impact review under the National Environmental Policy Act. This NEPA review will eventually yield a recommendation for the “preferred alternative”. Your continued vigilance, participation, and input will be vital throughout this process.
