Partnerships and Advocacy

The Apalachicola Riverkeeper seeks to foster active partnerships in advocating for the protection and preservation of a healthy river shed throughout the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) river basin. We proposed and gained the endorsement of the 6 Florida counties bordering on the Apalachicola River for evaluation criteria to assess any Water Allocation Formula developed in the Tri-State negotiations. By joint advocacy we continue to make the voice of the people most directly affected by the water Allocation outcome to be heard.

At present we are also allied with the Upper River Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and the Middle River Chattahoochee Riverkeeper in the Tri-State Coalition in advocating for an equitable distribution of ACF Basin waters. We are jointly seeking to ensure that both the quantity and quality of Basin waters is adequate to support historical uses and preserve Basin ecology and rich bio-diversity.

Sea turtle monitoring efforts originally included as part of Apalachicola Riverkeeper pursuits now have an organization of their own: Sea Turtles At Risk.

Finally, we were selected to team with 1000 Friends of Florida to undertake a major coordinated effort in public education and outreach. The shared objective is to advocate for a process that will enable the informed citizens of our Basin to influence community planning and to participate actively in the development and approval of optional futures as the area seeks to manage explosive growth.
